2 Feb 2011 | Press release - Grontmij to work on the Les Halles Tunnel in Paris

The City of Paris has asked Ginger (part of Grontmij) for the project management and supervision of the restructuring of the Les Halles Tunnel in central Paris. The total project costs are € 70 million. The fee value for Grontmij is € 3.6 million.

The restructuring of the tunnel is part of a plan to reduce the volume of car traffic passing through the centre of Paris and to re-establish the continuity of pedestrian routes which are presently interrupted or diverted by entrances and exits to road tunnels.

The project works will be carried out between March 2011 and September 2015. The operation will consist of five phases. About 20% of the work will be undertaken at night. The restructuring of the tunnel entails the removal of the North-South barrier; the rerouting of the tunnel system in the form of a single loop and the removal or adaption of tunnel entrances and exits.

Apart from the overall project management Ginger will also monitor the works, permits, implementation plans and maintenance work. In addition Ginger will inspect tunnel equipment, safety systems and tunnel operation systems; and will take care of the financial management of the construction work, as well as carry out traffic studies.

Ginger has been working on the renovation of the entire district les Halles since 2004. Recently Ginger was selected for another project in the les Halles district for the restructuring of the carpark Berger.

Jean-Luc Schnoebelen, Vice President of the Executive Committee of Grontmij N.V. and Managing Director of Ginger: 'I am extremely proud that the City of Paris has chosen Ginger to participate in the major plans to redesign the Les Halles district. By restructuring the Les Halles tunnel, Ginger will contribute once again to improving the quality of life of the people of Paris, an operation that ties in perfectly with the spirit of our Grontmij Group: Planning, Connecting, Respecting the future'.
